Did you know that watermelon is more than just a juicy fruit?
I noticed that I feel good after eating watermelon. It contains a variety of minerals and vitamins.
To be honest, I wasn't a big fan of watermelon initially because it tasted more like vegetables, very watery, and not very sweet. Many years ago, my brothers used to feed Japanese Rhinoceros beetles in a small cage, associating watermelon with insect food in my mind.
However, my perception of watermelon recently changed after trying the sweet watermelon in Singapore and feeling better upon eating it.

According to the US Department of Agriculture, 100g of watermelon contains the following:
Dietary fiber: 0.4g
Vitamin C: 8.1mg
Potassium: 112mg
Calcium: 7mg
Beta carotene: 303 µg
Vitamin A: 28μg
Lycopene: 4530µg
Magnesium: 10mg
Zinc: 0.1mg
There are many minerals and vitamins that make us feel better and improve our skin condition.
This is why we should eat watermelon during the summer to gain health benefits:
1. Watermelon is a fruit of the summer season.
It's the best season regarding nutrition, taste, and price!
2. Potassium in watermelon helps reduce salt retention, making it beneficial for swelling and high blood pressure.
When we consume excessive salt, our body tries to eliminate the extra salt while retaining as much water as possible. This retention causes swelling. Moreover, high salt levels in the body lead to increased blood volume and higher blood pressure.
3. Beta Carotene in watermelon contributes to eye health and boosts immunity.
It converts into vitamin A, which improves our eyesight and strengthens our immune system. Additionally, beta-carotene acts as an antioxidant, protecting our skin from wrinkles and spots.
4. Citrulline, an amino acid present in watermelon, enhances blood circulation.
The Latin term "citrullus" means watermelon and citrulline itself promotes improved blood flow.
5. Lycopene removes active oxygen, which deteriorates skin condition
When it comes to lycopene, you may think of tomatoes. However, watermelon actually contains more lycopene than tomatoes.
Here's how to select a sweet watermelon:
When we know how to choose a sweet watermelon, we develop a greater liking for it, allowing us to reap health benefits more frequently.
1. Look for ones with clear green and black stripes.
The border between the black and green stripes should be distinct. Such watermelons are usually delicious.
2. A sweet watermelon has a sunken black stripe.
When you touch the surface, you should feel a slight depression in the black part of the stripe. This indicates that the watermelon is sweet.
Remember: Watermelon does not ripen further once it's picked. Therefore, consume it soon after purchasing.
Lastly, as with anything, consuming too much watermelon can have negative effects. So, avoid excessive consumption!
